What You’ll Need in Order to Prepare
For those who are new to skating, or new to the facility, there is much to consider; Registration, Enrollment, Membership, Skates & other Equipment. Please review the details below for guidance.
Registration & Enrollment
In order to add your student (ages 4+) to DDSA’s student roster and the family to our Enrollee communication list, visit our register/log-in page, create a profile, select the class that best fits your family and pay the annual $40 registration fee. This is the first step to completely signing up for lessons.
Tuition & Adams-Butzel Membership
Membership is a requirement and added benefit of participation in DDSA courses. Although pricing varies by age, Butzel offers memberships at an affordable rate. Without completing this step, enrollment/registration is incomplete, as this is where you pay tuition, as well. In order to secure the recreational membership at Adams-Butzel Recreation Center and pay tuition, please visit the Community Pass site (which can also be accessed on our Membership & Tuition link in our site menu) and take the following steps:
Enter “Detroit” in the search bar. The City of Detroit Parks & Recreation home page will appear.
Select “Create an Account” and complete the sign up process.
Select “Memberships and Programs” Adams/Butzel Membership, and select the appropriate membership for the skater being enrolled.
Ad the membership to your cart.
Search Dream Detroit Skating Academy in the search bar on the page
Click add session and then add the session fee to your cart.
Checkout & Pay.
Email DDSA a screenshot of your payment confirmation.
Skates & Equipment
SKATES:
DDSA does not offer skates for purchase. However, Jack-Adams Memorial Ice Rink does offer rentals. While we understand that first-timers may not want to make the commitment to purchase figure skates, we STRONGLY encourage students attend class with their own skates. This is a safety measure, as new skates will mold better to a skater’s ankle and foot than used skates. As such, DDSA is not liable for injury and/or accidents as it pertains to used skates. Since we do recommend purchasing your own skates, we have taken the liberty to list vendors where skates are sold. DDSA suggest Jackson or Ridell brands for your figure skating.
Resources for procuring figure skates include:
Detroit Custom Skate Shop (located in the Detroit Skating Club)
Address: 888 Dension Ct. Bloomfield Twp
Phone: 248-335-8790
Hours: Mon-Fri: 10am-6pm Sat: 9am-4pm
Livonia
Clawson
Novi
Canton
ATTIRE:
We recommend that skaters DO NOT wear jeans, but rather, comfortable clothing in which they find it is easy to move around. Additionally, the temperature at the rink is quite low in order to maintain the ice. As such DDSA suggests that students dress in layers, but not so many layers that students’ movement becomes restricted. Examples include leggings, yoga pants, or sweatpants; long sleeve shirts, light jackets or sweatshirts. We also recommend protecting extremeties such as ears and fingers, so please also plan to have gloves and headbands in tow. Younger children ages 4 to 6 should bring a helmet until they’re comfortable on the ice.
ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT:
In addition to purchasing figure skates, students will also need the following to protect themselves and their skates:
Skate guards (please adjust to blade size)
Soakers & hand towel to dry blades
Skate bag (DDSA branded skate bags for sale on-site)
Helmets for students (ages 4 to 6)
Gloves
NOTE: Skate rentals through Butzel and skate bags available for purchase on-site are the only equipment that DDSA provides. All other items are the responsibility of the registered student/parent. Students are welcome to use skate bags that are not DDSA-branded bags.
