What You’ll Need in Order to Prepare

For those who are new to skating, or new to the facility, there is much to consider; Registration, Enrollment, Membership, Skates & other Equipment. Please review the details below for guidance.

Registration & Enrollment

In order to add your skater (ages 4+) to Dream Detroit’s skater roster and the family to our Enrollee communication list, visit our register/log-in page, create a profile, select the class that best fits your family and pay the annual $40 registration fee for new skaters or $25 registration fee for returning skaters. This is the first step to signing up for classes.

Tuition & Adams-Butzel Membership

Membership to the Adams Butzel Recreation Center is a requirement and added benefit of participating in Dream Detroit’s Learn to Skate Classes. Pricing varies by age and by home address (slightly higher for non- Detroit Residents), Adam Butzel offers memberships at an affordable rate. Without completing this step, enrollment/registration is not complete. In order to secure the recreational membership at Adams-Butzel Recreation Center and pay tuition, please visit the recreation center during one of our in-person enrollment events. We announce these on our Instagram account and on our Current Events page.

Skates & Equipment

SKATES:

Dream Detroit does not offer skates for purchase. While we understand that first-timers may not want to make the commitment to purchase figure skates, we REQUIRE all skaters to provide their own skates. As such, Dream Detroit is not liable for injury and/or accidents that can occur with used skates. Since we do require purchasing your own skates, we have listed vendors where skates can be purchased. Dream Detroit suggests Jackson or Ridell brands for your first pair of skates.

Vendors for purchasing skates:

  1. Detroit Custom Skate Shop (located in the Detroit Skating Club)

    1. Address: 888 Dension Ct. Bloomfield Twp

    2. Phone: 248-335-8790

    3. Hours: Mon-Fri: 10am-6pm Sat: 9am-4pm

  2. Play it Again Sports:

    1. Livonia

    2. Clawson

    3. Novi

    4. Canton

ATTIRE:

We recommend that skaters DO NOT wear jeans, skaters should wear clothes that are stretchy and not overly baggy to allow for free, unrestricted movement on the ice. Additionally, the temperature at the rink is quite low in order to maintain the ice. Dream Detroit suggests that skaters dress in layers, but not so many layers that skater’s movements become restricted. Examples include leggings, yoga pants, or sweatpants; long sleeve shirts, light jackets or sweatshirts. We also recommend protecting ears and fingers, by wearing hats/thermal headbands and gloves. Younger children ages 4 to 6 should bring a helmet until they are comfortable on the ice.

ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT:

In addition to purchasing figure skates, skaters will also need the following to protect themselves and their skates:

NOTE: All are the responsibility of the registered skater/parent. Skaters are welcome to use skate bags that are not Dream Detroit-branded bags.
